I've been doing a study on deceit and found that it is something the Lord hates. The language in scripture is strong regarding it, whereas many times people engage in it casually, frequently to protect their image and make themselves appear to be something they are not. When someone is lied against, they need not rush to defend themselves. It's so much better to let God do the defending. Just as the Pharisees tried to defame the character of Jesus, scripture says, "He opened not his mouth." Jesus' life, death and resurrection were evidence of his integrity and character. The Lord himself is the best defender anyone could have.

Psalm 52:4 –7
[to the man who loves lying more than truth] You love to slander—you love to say anything that will do harm, O man with the lying tongue. But God will strike you down and pull you from your home, and drag you away from the land of the living. The followers of God will see it happen. They will watch in awe. Then they will laugh and say, “See what happens to those who despise God and trust in their wealth, and become ever more bold in their wickedness.”

[and to the one is lied against...] But I am like a sheltered olive tree protected by the Lord himself. I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. O Lord, I will praise you forever and ever for your punishment. And I will wait for your mercies—for everyone knows what a merciful God you are.
