Photo from Chincoteague 05

Fulfilling, long lasting relationships are sometimes like sunsets. As clouds separate, obscure or expose the sun, so affection, disappointment, passion and reality change the colors and patterns of love. Never exactly the same twice.

Sunsets change from one moment to another. You could almost blink and it’s over. One moment completely hidden by clouds, but in an instant, the wind could force an opening and allow brilliance to shoot across the sky. What if I had dismissed the idea of seeking out a good vantage point because the Weatherman called for “mostly cloudy”? It’s always worth a try.

What will it take to finally arrive at the top of the hill? Will the park be
nearly empty
almost dark
like it was one night this week?

As I watched the sunset I know I reflected the colors of the sky.
I had to.
I’ll continue to chase sunsets.

I chased the sunset the other day.
Driving home from work
October sky captured me.

Wanting to watch uninterrupted by traffic,
I zipped into Giant’s parking lot
but lost the view altogether.
Back onto 113 then another lot
behind the Chinese restaurant.
Trees blocking now.

In minutes it would be gone,
slipping under the edge of the earth.
God, let me capture it,
draw in some of its fading light.

Two more miles to the park, speedily,
past the turnoff to home.
Finally
an unobstructed vantage point for the setting sun.

Glorious!
I stood on the ridge
Still
Hardly breathing
I pressed the shutter
seizing the ever-changing masterpiece.
Who
but God?
